Who to call first

Most questions are answered fastest at the school

  • Your child's teacher

Grades, classwork, friendships, anything happening inside the classroom.

  • The school office

Attendance, transfers, records, health forms, transportation, bell schedules.

  • The principal

Anything unresolved after the teacher, or a safety concern on campus.

  • The board

District policy, budget, boundaries, and decisions that affect every campus. That is public comment, and it is where I want to be useful.

Questions people actually ask

Straight answers

What can one trustee do alone?

One vote out of five. A trustee can ask questions on the record, request information, place items for discussion through the agenda process, and explain decisions publicly. A trustee cannot direct staff, hire or fire employees individually, or promise an outcome alone.

How do I speak at a board meeting?

Fill out a public comment card before the item is called. You get a set number of minutes. You do not need to be an expert, and you do not need to speak about an agenda item to be heard during general public comment.

How does the district budget get adopted?

Staff build a proposed budget tied to the district's plan for student outcomes, the public gets a hearing, and the board adopts it by a public vote before the fiscal year begins. It is revised during the year as state funding changes.

Am I in Trustee Area 3?

Trustee areas follow district boundary maps, not school attendance areas, so neighbors on the same street can vote in different races. Check your address against the district's published trustee area map, or ask and the campaign will look it up with you.

Why does a local race matter this much?

School board races are decided by a small number of votes, and the board sets the policies and budget that shape your child's day. Turnout in Area 3 is the whole race.
